Internship: Human Rights Defenders and Security programme

Justice and Peace Netherlands is committed to a just and sustainable world. We support human rights defenders who work at the local level worldwide with trainings, our temporary relocation programme Shelter City and advocacy. We are also dedicated to an equitable treatment and protection of refugees. In The Netherlands we organise Welkom Hier festivals together with local partners and refugees. On a political level we advocate for a human dimension, dignity and uniformity in the Dutch and European Migration policy.

The Human Rights Defenders Programme

The ‘Human Rights Defenders and Security’ programme of Justice and Peace supports Human Rights Defenders all over the world through the following projects:

  • Shelter City, in which Human Rights Defenders at risk are temporarily relocated in The Netherlands for 3 months in order to rest and respite, gain new knowledge, energy, and expand their network.
  • The Hague Training Course (THTC), in which they participate in 10-day training course that aims to support Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) by facilitating the strengthening of their knowledge and skills on 4 main modules: training of trainers, holistic security (physical, digital, psychological), advocacy and policy influencing and international protection mechanisms.

Research project – Schiedam Vital City

Brief description research project

To improve vitality and health of Schiedam citizens, the municipality of Schiedam aims to implement an integrated health policy in which cooperation within the health domain and between other domains (e.g. physical environment, education, culture, economy, social affairs) is central.

Starting point in shaping an integrated health policy for Schiedam is the model of Lalonde, which distinguishes between four influences on health:

1)            biological factors (heredity, gender);

2)            environmental factors (physical and social);

3)            accessibility of (care) facilities;

4)            lifestyle (attitude, knowledge, behaviour).

Important question for Schiedam is to determine which factor(s) of the model to focus on, taking interaction between the various factors into account. Thereof, a derivative research question is:

What is the relative contribution of the four influence areas of the Lalonde model on health?

This research question will be answered by conducting a literature search.
